Storm Alert: Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms & Possible Flooding Headed Our Way |
Heads-up to everyone in the SGV: a significant storm is moving into our region, and it comes with a mix of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and a credible risk of flooding, particularly in zones scarred by past fires. |
A powerful Pacific storm is set to sweep across Southern California this week, bringing a mix of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and the potential for flash flooding throughout the region, including the foothills and valleys of Monrovia, Arcadia, and Duarte.
A Wet and Unstable Week AheadForecasters from the National Weather Service are warning residents to prepare for multiple rounds of rain, some of which could be intense enough to trigger flooding in low-lying and fire-scarred areas.
The system is expected to generate thunderstorms, gusty winds, and periods of heavy downpours, especially during the midweek peak. Rainfall totals could range from one to three inches across most of Los Angeles County, with higher amounts likely along the foothills and mountain slopes. Meteorologists caution that localized torrential bursts could lead to dangerous flash floods or mudslides, particularly in zones previously affected by wildfires. Burn Areas and Flood RisksCommunities near recent burn scars, such as the Bobcat and Fish Fire zones in the San Gabriel Mountains, face an elevated threat of debris flow and rapid runoff. The combination of unstable soil, steep terrain, and saturated ground can lead to sudden mudslides even hours after the heaviest rainfall has passed.
City crews across the San Gabriel Valley have been clearing storm drains and distributing sandbags in anticipation of potential flooding. Residents are urged to check their properties, secure outdoor items, and ensure gutters and drains are clear. What Residents Should DoAuthorities are advising the public to take standard storm precautions:
For those in hillside or canyon areas, officials recommend having an evacuation plan in place should conditions worsen.
Business and Travel ImpactsDelivery drivers, commuters, and local resellers should expect possible delays and hazardous road conditions. Flooded intersections, fallen debris, and temporary road closures are all possible, especially during overnight and early morning hours. Business owners are encouraged to plan around the weather and communicate early with customers or shipping partners.
A Reminder of Seasonal ShiftsAfter months of warm, dry conditions, this storm serves as a reminder that Southern California’s rainy season is arriving, and it may be off to an active start.
Stay safe, stay dry, and stay informed as this week’s storm unfolds. |
